Nothing Ventured
The majority of my work has been representational in nature. The art of capturing landscape on film has been my primary pursuit for several years, however the 2020 lockdown provided an opportunity to venture into a new chapter in my career. A departure from my previous work in photography, the 'Nothing Ventured' series is an ongoing body of work that experiments with my existing portfolio of landscape and nature photographs by altering orientation and playing with form and color. My aim is to adopt a more experimental or abstract voice in my art by using my photographs as building blocks or paints on a palette; adding them to my canvas to create a visual cross section between the organic and inorganic. The titles of the pieces reference music I was listening to at the time of conception as well as the numerical representation of the colors used from Photoshop's Pantone color library. Listening to music as I create helps in my decision-making process when it comes to color and design and the pairing of the songs or artists referenced in my titles adds another interesting element to the viewing experience of the work. Great influences on this project are artists Kenneth Noland and Morris Louis, as well as contemporary painter Gary Hume. These new images are not quite photography, not quite painting; they are a hybridization of art practices. This is my language; a designed abstraction.
